Previous exhibitions of this kind have so far addressed the perspective of a flâneur or an urban stroller witnessing the progress and decline of Seoul, explored the lights and colors of this metropolis, and looked into the city’s microscopic world composed of such elements through works by domestic young artists. This exhibition is designed to present a new possibility of the contemporary ‘still life’ with a modern city as its setting. It looks into the lives of contemporary people coexisting with urban still lifes. This intends to explore the still life primarily created by contemporary artists as a metaphor reflecting aspects of the modern era such as mass culture, capitalism, consumption society, mass production, and the social fabric. This departs from the conventional notion of the still life as a work of art depictig mostly inanimate subject matter and tries to look for the city’s influence on those artists of still life.
